Antecedents

Antecedents: it's as easy as ABC

What and why

What

Antedecent:

  • Avoid misbehaviour before it happens.
  • Remind students of merits/the Golden Ticket given last lesson and the opportunities that lesson.
  • Tell them the best way to gain these is through STEPS SHAPE SLANT.
Why
  • The antecedent, which means ‘something that comes before’, can be anything that triggers a given behaviour. It could be good or bad.
  • Positive behaviours subsequently result in positive consequences (and negative behaviours, negative consequences.)
  • In teaching, we use hundreds of antecedents and often we don’t even realise it. But if we were to be conscious of them, imagine how many more positive behaviours we could elicit from our students?

Positive teacher antecedents

There are lots of positive teacher antecedents that exist in our playbook. Here are some examples:

  • Threshold
  • Narrating the positive
  • swivel
  • Updating DPR
  • Live marking
  • Front loading with means of participation
  • Be Seen Looking
  • Positive framing
  • Actively monitoring
