Silent Solo

Silent SLOP

Using DPR as a live AFL tool

What

  • Focus on live marking targeted misconceptions or errors.
  • Walk around constantly.
  • Have DPR KO/class view on display and update DPR judgements as you actively monitor and live mark.

Why

  1. High think and participation ratio: everyone in the room is thinking hard
  2. Silence is golden: research shows that silence will provide you with the best indication of learning; you can therefore accurately assess learning
  3. Facilitates feedback: Our live feedback means intervention is timely and specific (EEF).
  4. Progress: Real-time fix it means they can move on in their learning.
  5. AfL - motivational and timely: Our live marking allows us to assess and timely judgment updates is not only a time saver, but motivational!

Establishing the SLOP routine

SLOP is a routine. To turn an activity into a routine, make your directions simple, clear cut and stepped. (Peps McCrea)

1. Front load instructions with MOP

Time, conditions, task (CFU) - Bushra’s tip

2. Motivation

I can’t wait to read these… I might even be able to move some people up on DPR today...

3. Brighten lines: the cue should be ‘punchy’ - short and delivered with change of tone/pace (McCrea)

When I say go you will….Ready? Go!

4. 3:30:30 rule

Remain at swivel for 3 mins, 30 Go to your SAF for 30 secs, 30 Return to swivel for 30 seconds and BSL

5. Live mark using criteria / KO

Go row by row / SAF first / by table / groups...

6. Update DPR

Seen evidence for an update? Silently update and return to live marking. Watch the students notice this...

High Frequency Errors

1. Instructions are unclear. Conditions are not set. We allow students to talk ‘quietly.’

What do we do Sir? What page was it again?

2. Loudly telling off off-task Bobby

Creates ‘attention residue’ and poor ‘think ratio’

3. Monotone. On task behaviour is not obvious or visible.

Ok...off you go then... Sleepy vibes.

4. We make a beeline for Bobby (the SAF).

Others get off task quickly as they can see our attention is elsewhere.

5. We don’t live mark.

No time. Wrong conditions. Task is not extended.

6. DPR is not updated.

It is forgotten about and we forget our ‘assessment’ of their learning after the lesson.

What A Good One Looks Like

Key takeaways

  • Front load your instructions with MoP to set the conditions
  • Brighten lines: be ‘punchy’: adapt tone/pace. When I say go….Go!
  • Update and motivate: update the DPR as you live mark
