Show Call

Re-model, re-teach (Phase 4)

What

EDI Phase 4.5 Shed Loads of Practice: when you spot a common error, stop the class. Insist on 100% undivided attention using SLANT. Re-teach. Re-model.

What is Show Call?

  • A type of Cold Call that involves taking students' written work and displaying it to the class
  • A strategy to check for understanding, maximise rigor and accountability for written work
  • It spotlights “bright spots” in real time, and helps build a culture of error

Why

  1. Engage and build students perception in the problem solving process
  2. Quick and productive way to tackle errors or misconceptions
  3. Feedback is live and students improve their work instantly
  4. Builds think and participation ratio

Success Criteria & and High Frequency Errors

Teacher live marks during SLOP

Set the conditions for SLOP and then begin live marking.

HFE: Teacher is sat down at their desk during phase 4

Identify a common error or misconception

Are you giving the same feedback on multiple occasions that would benefit the whole class? Call 321 SLANT to avoid split attention before you address the class.

HFE: Doesn't identify the link between errors in work

The Take & Positive framing

Thank the student as you take their book (use the same approach as cold call so that students know any book can be shown under the visualiser). Use language such as I'm glad you have made this mistake now as we can all learn from it - create a culture of error

HFE: Doesn't normalise the positive process of show call

The Reveal & Checking for Understanding

Read the work out with expression. Highlight all the positives and things you love about the work. Normalise the process or making it better and talking through our thought process. Check the understanding throughout the process.

HFE: Doesn't make it clear 'how' to improve or doesn't check for understanding

Set the conditions for fix it time

When I say go and not before, I want you to pick up your green pens, fix this paragraph by yourself in silence. You have 4 minutes to do this. Remember to hit the success criteria I went through. Ready? ...Go!

HFE: Transition between tasks is not clear

What A Good One Looks Like
